'Finding Arthur' by Adam Ardrey

Release date: 21st November 2013
Published by: Gerald Duckworth & Co Ltd
ISBN No: 9780715645833

The legend of King Arthur has been told and retold for centuries. As the king who united a nation, his is the story of England itself. But what if Arthur wasn't English at all? As writer and activist Adam Ardrey discovered, the reason historians have had little success identifying the historical Arthur may be incredibly simple: he wasn't an Englishman at all. He was from Scotland. Finding Arthur chronicles Ardrey's unlikely quest to uncover the secret of Scotland s greatest king and conqueror, which has been hiding in plain sight for centuries. His research began as a simple exploration of a notable Scottish clan, but quickly it became clear that many of the familiar symbols of Arthurian legend - the Round Table, the Sword in the Stone, the Lady of the Lake - are based on very real and still accessible places in the Scottish Highlands. Sure to be controversial, Finding Arthur rewrites the legend of Arthur for a new age.

'The Christmas Angel' by Jane Maas

Release date: 19th November 2013
Published by: Thomas Dune Books
ISBN No:  978 1250037572

A charming, heart-warming Christmas tale, sure to delight fans of Debbie Macomber and Richard Paul Evans, about the power of family, tradition, and love.

In 1875, Owen Thomas, a poor Welsh coal miner, falls in love with a beautiful London actress, Jessica Lavery. He builds her a cottage in his village, and enchants her with the promise of the holidays they'll share after they marry. According to his special Thomas family tradition, the Christmas tree must always be outside, where it can look up to God. Owen carves her an angel to go on top of their tree, with lavender eyes like hers, a token more meaningful to her than any engagement ring.

When Jessica breaks off their romance, Owen, broken-hearted, wraps the angel in his mother's shawl and brings her to America. There, she looks down over five generations, witnessing peace and war, triumphs and tragedies, reminding all who see her that Christmas is the time when families and sweethearts can come together, laughter and goodwill can lighten even the heaviest burden, and magic fills the earth. This is a story of faith and love. And of the miracle that brought the angel home again.

Author Interview with Cait O'Sullivan

Cait O'Sullivan is an author with a love of words and magic, having had the good fortune to grow up in Ireland. The wanderlust in her blood sent her out to travel the world and now, residing in a leafy suburb of London, it is her thoughts and memories that journey far and wide in order to create her stories.

A very warm welcome to you Cait, and can I thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to talk to us today.
You’re very welcome Calum, I’m very happy to be here.

For the benefit of our International readers can you tell us a bit about the part of the world that you are currently resident in and why do you like living there?
I’m living in London at the moment and whereas I do enjoy the benefits of living in a large city such as the ready access to new and exciting music and dance, I do miss Ireland and wouldn't half mind living there again.

Can I ask what sort of books did you like reading as a child?
‘Twas fantasy all the way for me': CS Lewis, Tolkien (obv), Stephen Donaldson, Raymond Feist that kinda thing.

Do you think the books that you read as a child have influenced your writing in any way?
Well I started as a contemporary romance writer, now the fantastical elements have crept in. Heck what am I saying, they barged right in and said ta-daaaah! So yes, I guess you could say that, Calum.

Do you have a set routine when you are working on a novel?
At the moment, absolutely. I get out of bed at 5am, sneak downstairs, put the coffee on and go back to bed to write for two hours before my beauties wake up and the day starts. Once they’re at school, I go to a local coffee shop and write there for three hours. Thirty hours a week is what I strive to do.

Where do you do your writing best?
At my local coffee shop, aided wonderfully by coffee of course!

What helped you decide to actually write novels?
Having told people I wanted to write, the time came for me to do it, or to stop talking about it.

When you are writing a novel, how do you place yourself into the time period that you are actually writing about?

Easy—I write in this time period, give or take a couple of decades.

How do you go about imagining, developing and give real lives and personalities to the characters that we read about within in your books?

Generally I’ll have a vague image in my head of my characters, then I give them free rein to say or do what they like, very rarely censoring them or hauling them back. I hope this works!!

Did you encounter any difficulties in getting you book accepted and published?
Not really, no, thankfully. ‘Sefton Manor’ was accepted by Musa and then I wrote ‘Mugs’ to accompany it on it’s publishing journey which Musa happily loved too.

Did you have to undertake any research for your books?

My WIP at the moment took up a lot of research, but no, generally speaking I don’t do a lot of research.

What is your favourite book and why?
‘Lord of the Rings’. I haven’t yet come across another book that I love with such a passion as I did this trilogy. I used to read them every summer, sitting in the apple tree in our garden in Ireland. I would love to meet another book that has the same effect on me, but I’m still waiting. Any ideas?

Are you currently reading a book at the moment and if so, what is it?
‘Game of Thrones’, book IV. I’m wading through it because my WIP is fantasy and I think George RR Martin’s imagination is so immense, I’m looking for tips!

Do you have any other hobbies or interests that you enjoy in order to give you a break from your normal routine and your writing?
Dancing and music, either West African or Irish…have you listened to the kora yet? If I can’t get my fix there, I love spinning and walking as long as it doesn’t intrude with my 30 hour week ;).

Can you give us a hint about any other books that you may have in the making at the moment?
LOL.  I've give you lots of hints. It is a departure from what I've written before, as it is epic fantasy and whilst there will be a bit of romance, that’s only secondary to the main story. Let’s see, what else can I tell you? The first one is set in Ireland…and nope, you can’t hear anymore. I’m half way through the first draft and have a deadline to get it finished by Christmas.

Cait, I have been absolutely delighted and very honoured that you agreed to be interviewed for my literary site. I would also like to thank-you again for taking the time to speak to us today.

I’m honoured myself to be here among such esteemed company — thank you, Calum.

'The Rise of the Tudors: The Family That Changed English History' by Chris Skidmore

Release date: 14th January 2014
Published by: St Martin's Press
ISBN No: 978 0312541392

On the morning of August 22, 1485, in fields several miles from Bosworth, two armies faced each other, ready for battle. The might of Richard III's army was pitted against the inferior forces of the upstart pretender to the crown, Henry Tudor, a twenty-eight year old Welshman who had just arrived back on British soil after fourteen years in exile. Yet this was to be a fight to the death--only one man could survive; only one could claim the throne. It would become one of the most legendary battles in English history: the only successful invasion since Hastings, it was the last time a king died on the battlefield. But The Rise Of The Tudors is much more than the account of the dramatic events of that fateful day in August. It is a tale of brutal feuds and deadly civil wars, and the remarkable rise of the Tudor family from obscure Welsh gentry to the throne of England--a story that began sixty years earlier with Owen Tudor's affair with Henry V's widow, Katherine of Valois.Drawing on eyewitness reports, newly discovered manuscripts and the latest archaeological evidence, including the recent discovery of Richard III's remains, Chris Skidmore vividly recreates this battle-scarred world and the reshaping of British history.

'Rebellion: Britain's First Stuart Kings, 1567-1642' by Tim Harris

Release date: January 2014
Published by: Oxford University Press
ISBN No:  978 0199209002

A gripping new account of one of the most important and exciting periods of British and Irish history: the reign of the first two Stuart kings, from 1567 to the outbreak of civil war in 1642 - and why ultimately all three of their kingdoms were to rise in rebellion against Stuart rule.

Both James VI and I and his son Charles I were reforming monarchs, who endeavoured to bolster the authority of the crown and bring the churches in their separate kingdoms into closer harmony with one another. Many of James's initiatives proved controversial - his promotion of the plantation of Ulster, his reintroduction of bishops and ceremonies into the Scottish kirk, and his stormy relationship with his English parliaments over religion and finance - but he just about got by. Charles, despite continuing many of his father's policies in church and state, soon ran into difficulties and provoked all three of his kingdoms to rise in rebellion: first Scotland in 1638, then Ireland in 1641, and finally England in 1642.

Was Charles's failure, then, a personal one; was he simply not up to the job? Or was the multiple-kingdom inheritance fundamentally unmanageable, so that it was only a matter of time before things fell apart? Did perhaps the way that James sought to address his problems have the effect of making things more difficult for his son? Tim Harris addresses all these questions and more in this wide-ranging and deeply researched new account, dealing with high politics and low, constitutional and religious conflict, propaganda and public opinion across the three kingdoms - while also paying due attention to the broader European and Atlantic contexts.
