'The Evening Spider' by Emily Arsenault

Release date: 18th February 2016
Published by: William Morrow Paperbacks
ISBN No: 978 0062379313

A gripping blend of psychological suspense and historical true crime, this riveting novel-inspired by a sensational real-life murder from the 1800s-by critically acclaimed author Emily Arsenault delivers a heart-stopping mystery linking two young mothers from different centuries. Frances Barnett and Abby Bernacki are two haunted young mothers living in the same house in two different centuries. 1885: Frances Barnett is in the Northampton Lunatic Hospital, telling her story to a visitor. She has come to distrust her own memories, and believes that her pregnancy, birth, and early days of motherhood may have impaired her sanity. During the earliest months of her baby's life, Frances eagerly followed the famous murder trial of Mary Stannard-that captivated New Englanders with its salacious details and expert forensic testimony. Following-and even attending-this trial, Frances found an escape from the monotony of new motherhood. But as her story unfolds, Frances must admit that her obsession with the details of the murder were not entirely innocent. Present day: Abby has been adjusting to motherhood smoothly-until recently, when odd sensations and dreams have begun to unsettle her while home alone with her baby. When she starts to question the house's history, she is given the diary of Frances Barnett, who lived in the house 125 years earlier. Abby finds the diary disturbing, and researches the Barnett family's history. The more Abby learns, the more she wonders about a negative-possibly supernatural-influence in her house. She becomes convinced that when she sleeps, she leaves her daughter vulnerable-and then vows not to sleep until she can determine the cause of her eerie experiences. Frances Barnett might not be the only new mother to lose her mind in this house. And like Frances, Abby discovers that by trying to uncover another's secrets, she risks awakening some of her own.

Blog Tour Stop: 'The Exclusives' with the Author Rebecca Thornton

I am delighted that I am able to introduce you all to the author Rebecca Thornton at 'The Secret Writer' today. Rebecca has just written a powerful debut novel entitled 'The Exclusives' which is about friendship and tragedy at an exclusive boarding school.

Rebecca works as a journalist and also runs an on-line advertising business. She has written for a number of well known magazines and newspapers and has travelled to many parts of the world in her job role as a journalist.

Rebecca is with us today to answer some questions that I have put to her in relation to her new novel 'The Exclusives' and I am very grateful to Rebecca for visiting us here today.

Rebecca, on creating the two central characters in 'The Exclusives' Freya and Josephine, where did your inspiration for their characters come from? Are they similar to you or anyone you know in any way? How was it writing about them when they were teenagers and also when they are adults and do you sympathise with them?

Hi Calum. Thanks so much for having me here at 'The Secret Writer'.

My two main characters, Josephine and Freya, are best friends at an exclusive English boarding school. They've been brought together by the absence of both their mothers and ripped apart by the after-effect of a celebratory night out that goes wrong.

My inspiration for Josephine came from a voice that entered my head at three o'clock one morning. It was the beginning part of my novel and the tone of the words paved the way for Josephine’s character – complex and damaged but also upright and non-defeatist. I initially had no idea what I was going to write about. I knew I wanted to set a novel in a girls’ boarding school but that was it. I had tried writing in third-person and when someone suggested I try first-person that sparked the inspiration for Josephine’s voice and thereafter, the plot.

For Freya, Josephine’s best friend, I needed someone who was the opposite to Josephine but with similar qualities – both are fragile, yet show it in totally different ways. Looks wise, I had in mind a Hollywood actress when I wrote Freya. But only because I've got a bit of a girl crush on this celeb – in that I love all her films and the way she dresses. Bit sad!

Another of the lesser main characters was based on someone I saw on Facebook! I was scrolling through some random person’s network and I saw this girl that totally fitted how I imagined Verity, the Deputy Head Girl, to be. I couldn't get her out my head, so every time I wrote about Verity, I brought the image of this girl from Facebook into my mind. I still don’t even know who she is! It would be very peculiar if I ever happened to bump into her or meet her one day.

The characters aren't intentionally similar to myself or anyone I know. I desperately tried to base one of the characters on someone I know because I thought it would be a really easy way out. Unfortunately, it totally hampered the story – there was no space for my imagination to flow as the character kept doing things that this girl would do in real life, so I had to start all over again.

I'm sure there are parts of me in the book somewhere. I’d better not admit that too much because after my husband read it, I think he was a bit shocked.

I loved writing the girls as teenagers. It felt really uninhibited and nostalgic about how little they knew and how vulnerable they were. I found it interesting to see what type of people they developed into as adults and I sympathised with both Freya and Josephine. They both dealt with things in polar opposite ways but their foundations were the same.  Josephine is harder to sympathise with because she is more of a divisive character but in the end, I think that’s why I felt sorrier for her.

Book Synopsis
1996. Freya Seymour and Josephine Grey are invincible - beautiful and brilliant, the two best friends are on the cusp of Oxbridge, and the success they always dreamed they'd share.

2014. Freya gets in touch, looking for a conversation Josephine has run away from for eighteen long and tortured years.

Beginning with one ill-fated night, The Exclusives charts the agonising spiral of friendship gone wrong, the heartache and betrayal of letting down those closest to you and the poisonous possibilities of what we wouldn't do when everything we prize is placed under threat.

And in the end, as she realises she cannot run for ever, Josephine must answer one question: is it Freya she cannot face, or is it her own darkest secret?

'Rome 1600: The City and the Visual Arts Under Clement VIII' by Clare Robertson

Release date: 25th January 2016
Published by: Yale University Press
ISBN No:978 0300215298

In 1600 Rome was the center of the artistic world. This fascinating book offers a new look at the art and architecture of the great Baroque city at this time of major innovation-especially in painting, largely owing to the presence of Annibale Carracci (1560-1609) and Caravaggio (1571-1610). Rome was a magnet for artists and architects from all over Europe; they came to study the remains of antiquity and the works of Michelangelo, Raphael, and Bramante. The sheer variety of artists working in the city ensured a diversity of styles and innovative cross-influences. Moreover, 1600 was a Jubilee year, offering numerous opportunities for artistic patronage, whether in major projects like St. Peter's, or in lesser schemes such as the restoration of older churches. Clare Robertson examines these developments as well as the patronage of the pope and of major Roman families, drawing on a range of contemporary sources and images to reconstruct a snapshot of Rome at this thrilling time.

News Item: Rosamund Pike Performs Jane Austin's 'Pride and Prejudice' for Audible

ROSAMUND PIKE PERFORMS JANE AUSTEN’S PRIDE AND PREJUDICE FOR AUDIBLE

NEW RECORDING NOW AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD AT AUDIBLE.CO.UK

London – 8December, 2015 – Audible Studios, a production arm of Audible, today announced the release of Rosamund Pike’s narration of Jane Austen’s beloved classic, Pride and Prejudice. This memorable performance by the Academy Award-nominated star of Gone Girl is now available for download at: http://www.audible.co.uk/prideandprejudice

Pride and Prejudice will always resonate with people because Austen is dealing with a theme that is so universal: falling in love for the first time,” said Pike, whose artistic relationship with the novel dates back to the 2005 film adaptation, in which she played Jane Bennet. “I hope people enjoy what I’ve done with it, and find my characterizations convincing. While narrating this, I was constantly listening, and making recordings of people’s voices which I thought might have some qualities useful for a character – whether it be the person’s tone, intonation, pitch, or cadence of speech. Performing this audiobook has been extremely rewarding for me. It’s made me think afresh about familiar things, and made me again appreciate what a great heroine Austen has given us in Elizabeth Bennet.”
Pride and Prejudice still captivates modern readers and listeners, and this new recording, makes it easy to see why,” said Audible UK Content Director Laurence Howell. “Austen’s timeless story of romance, family and social dynamics combined with Rosamund Pike’s beautiful performance make this a must-have for devotees of Austen’s novel, and it is a wonderful introduction to the book for a new generation of Austen fans.”

In addition to Pike, among the acclaimed performers who have narrated works of literature for Audible are Aiden Gillen, Jake Gyllenhaal, Kate Winslet, Jesse Eisenberg, and Aidan Gillan. In 2013, Audible Studios won its first Grammy Award, for its production of Janis Ian’s memoir Society’s Child, and also won the Audie Award for Audiobook of the Year, for Colin Firth’s performance of Graham Greene’s The End of the Affair.
Audible, the world’s largest seller and producer of downloadable audiobooks and other spoken-word content, invented and commercialized the first digital audio player in 1997, and has since been at the forefront of the explosively growing audiobook download segment. In 2014, listeners around the world downloaded 1.2 billion hours of audio from Audible outlets; Audible members downloaded an average of more than 17 books over the course of the year. Two thirds of new Audible members are first-time audiobook buyers.

But James has scars of his own and Sally isn’t quite ready to turn her back on her marriage. This birthday might have changed everything, but what will the next one bring?
